History
The land that is now known as Briones Park and the Russell Reservation were both a component of the Mexican land grant known as Rancho Boca de la Canada del Pinole that was awarded to Felipe Briones’ widow in 1842. Cattle ranching in the region was started by the Brione family, and it is still going strong to this day. The Briones family put the ranch up for sale in the year 1870.
By the year 1850, Happy Valley Road, which is located on the border of Briones Regional Park, had become the most important route from Martinez south to the Pueblo of San José, and then on to San Francisco. Happy Valley Road follows the perimeter of Briones Regional Park.
In 1909, the area was purchased for the purpose of protecting the watershed by the Peoples’ Water Company, which was the forerunner of the East Bay Municipal Utility District.
Since 1966, the University of California has used a region of the Briones Hills known as the Russell Reservation as a location for its research center. The Russell Reservation encompasses a total area of 283 acres.
