Castle Rock Recreation Area is situated within Diablo Foothills Regional Park, in a scenic canyon near Pine Creek. Oak forests and sandstone formations dominate the landscape.
Historically, Castle Rock has specialized in organizing picnic events for large groups of 300 or more people, but the East Bay Regional Park District began renovating the park for both drop-in and picnic use in 2007. Remember that there's no park shuttle service from front gate. Take your heavy or lightweight wagon stuff. The drive to the front gate pool area is one-quarter mile, an average six-minute walk. A half-mile walk to the Orchard Staging Area pool area.
Bordering Mt. Diablo State Park and Walnut Creek Open Space, Diablo Foothills Regional Park and Castle Rock Park have access to over 18,000 acres of public land.
Annual Closure Notice
The annual closure period for peregrine falcons safety extends from February 1 to July 31. It covers the entire rock formation area east of Stage Street. All trails leading up to the area are unofficial trails and not on the park map. Watch for signs indicating closed areas. All officially named trails throughout the park are open and not affected.
Basketball courts, horseshoe pits, a volleyball court, softball court, and regular picnic areas are now open to the public. There are 4 places with a capacity of 100 and 3 with a capacity of 50. Other picnic areas are accessible first-come, first-serve.
The swimming pool complex has a 70-feet swimming pool and deck areas. The complex is also fully accessible to people with disabilities, including the bathhouse and an accessible pool lift. Swimming is allowed only if the lifeguards are in operation.
Swim Facilities Capacity Notice
Once the swimming pool capacity is exceeded, no new entries are permitted for public safety for the remainder of the day (or at the Park Supervisor's discretion).
The park sidewalks are wheelchair-accessible. Some of the park's open wheelchair services include showers, changing rooms and beverages. PWD will call transportation aid workers at the park entrance gate.
