Buena Vista teachers engage in degree-level instruction related to the introduction of Readers and Writer's Workshop. Continuing to improve their practice ensures that students obtain the highest quality instruction. We are thankful that the WCSD supports this ongoing professional growth by supplying directly from Teacher's College Reading and Writing Project high quality trainers. The Teachers College Reading and Writing Project's mission is to help adolescents become enthusiastic and professional readers, authors, and inquirers. We achieve this goal through study, curriculum development, and with students, teachers, and school leaders working shoulder to shoulder. The organization has developed state-of - the-art tools and methods for teaching reading and writing, for driving development through success tests and learning progressions, and for literacy-rich content-area instruction. Teachers ' houses find the Students ' College Reading and Writing Program a continuous source of professional renewal and education. Our week-long institutes have attended well over 170,000 teachers, and over 4,000 participants return to annual Saturday meetings each year. Buena Vista has collaborated with Responsive Classroom to incorporate social-emotional learning into the context of the classroom. Responsive Classroom is an evidentiary teaching and training approach that focuses on engaging academics, supportive community, successful management, and understanding of development. Our professional development, books, and services help educators in elementary and middle schools build healthy, fun, and engaging classrooms and school communities where students learn good social and academic skills and where every student can succeed.
