Looking to assess whether you’re in need of some flexible workspace? Take this quiz and find out if the office space you’ve got is working for you or not!
1. What kind of work do you do?
a) I’m an independent consultant–I can pretty much work anywhere!
b) I’m a full-time employee for one company, but it’s very important that I get outside sometimes. Luckily my boss is super laid back about when I come in and leave.
c) My job requires me to be at my desk on time, every day. If I go home early or bring my laptop with me somewhere else, then people will notice that they can’t depend on me anymore!
2. Where are you right now?
a) At my kitchen table. I work from home at least once a week and it’s great to get out of the house!
b) In a coffee shop or park, enjoying the fresh air and people watching!
c) Waiting for my next conference call in an airport lounge–I like to travel with my laptop so that I can be very productive during downtime.
3. Where do you feel most productive?
a) Anywhere! But especially in spots where I’m surrounded by natural light and fresh air. The more windows, the better!
b) Somewhere quiet with no distractions is ideal for me. And also somewhere comfy to sit while I work–I need a good chair ! For example, I like to sit on the floor of my bedroom with some pillows stacked up behind me.
c) I’m very productive in quiet, enclosed spaces where I can fire up my laptop and get down to business.
4. When you’re feeling unproductive, what do you do?
a) If I’m feeling unproductive at home, then I’ll try working from a coffee shop for a while. Sometimes changing your environment is just what you need to feel recharged!
b) My schedule is so packed already that if I even take one sick day or vacation day a year, it’s newsworthy! So when this happens, there’s not much I can do besides drink lots of coffee and power through until I feel better.
c) When I’m not feeling productive at work, I will bring my laptop home and think of it as a “working from home” day–but really I just sleep in late and watch TV until it’s time for bed.
5. How much do you know about your company’s flexible workspace rules?
a) More than anyone! The more flexibility we employees have in how we work, the happier we’ll be and the more productive we’ll be when we’re at our desks. It’s win-win!
b) Not much, but that’s fine with me–I like to keep myself busy so thinking about “flexible workspace” stuff is actually pretty distracting. it might mean less face time with my coworkers, which sounds nice but also lonely at the same time?
c) My manager said that if I work from home one day a month then that counts as “flexible workspace”–if I could just stop making stupid mistakes on my reports she might be OK with me taking off more days!
6. How flexible are you?
a) Even though I can technically work anywhere, I’m not like some of those people who skip out on work early…even when it’s sunny outside! That’s what summer Fridays are for (which aren’t really Fridays).
b) All jokes aside, sometimes people email me to ask where I am and why they haven’t seen me all week. But if they’re happy working 9 to 5, then I’m happy working whenever!
c) I work at home every chance that I get. If no one can tell that I’m even there then what’s the point of coming into the office every day?
The future of flexible workspace
Although the workforce is more distributed, demand for high-quality office space isn’t going away. While employees appreciate the flexibility of being able to work remotely, JLL’s research shows they miss the ability to socialize and collaborate with others. They need a place to work where they feel inspired and have the technology and resources they need to be productive. That isn’t always possible in a home office.
At the same time, they’ve become accustomed to being able to work anywhere, so they expect more from their workplace than just a desk.
These flexible workspace trends can support a safe, collaborative environment when they are carefully planned and properly implemented. No matter which one you choose, make sure you have the right technology in place to support it.
