There are so many great hiking trails and beautiful views of the Bay Area from up high. The location makes this place perfect for any skill level because you can enjoy nature with ease while still being close enough to visit family.
Things to Do in Overlook
Overlook is a small town with plenty of unique shops and restaurants. There are also landmarks that you won’t find anywhere else, such as vintage clothing stores or home antique vendors on every corner. Here’s a shortlist of our favorites:
1. Lafayette Reservoir | Lafayette, CA 94549
The Lafayette Reservoir is a standby supply of drinking water for East Bay Municipal Utility District (EBMUD) customers. The 925-acre site with a 1.4 billion gallon reservoir was completed in 1933 and opened to public recreation in 1966 and features hiking, fishing, boating, and picnicking opportunities on its shores.
Lafayette Reservoir has rowboats and pedal boats that you can rent for the day. It’s also a great place to go fishing, with private vessels allowed if they have an auto-on top of them (no gas engines).
The Lafayette Reservoir is a fantastic spot to bring the family for an afternoon picnic. This beautiful, serene park has plenty of tables and barbecues perfect for smaller groups as well. There are two play areas where kids can enjoy themselves while you relax with your loved ones; there are also restroom facilities available alongside the parking area.
Enjoy a day of fishing at the Lafayette Reservoir with a $6 entry fee. The park is open from 6 am-9 pm, and there are discounts for seniors and disabled people as well.
2. Acalanes Ridge Open Space Acalanes South Trail | 1215 Bacon Way, Lafayette, CA 94549
The popular hiking area known as Acalanes Ridge is a collection of natural open spaces along the border of Walnut Creek and Lafayette. It’s home to some incredible views, including those from atop its 781-foot summit which offers panoramic scenes that span central Contra Costa all over Oakland Hills, Las Trampas Regional Wilderness Livermore foothills Mount Diablo Suisun Bay Briones Regional Park.
Acalanes Ridge is accessible via several trails, including the regional trail between Briones Regional Park and Mount Diablo State Park.
3. Airmail Navigation Arrow | 173 Oakvale Rd, Walnut Creek, CA 94597
The story behind this beautiful beacon is unique among all others—a tale so striking yet sad too.
The arrows of the Oakland, California flight path are a true piece of American history. Installed in 1923 as part of an airmail system that once spanned America and became obsolete with radar because it could not track flights at night but still can’t beat this arrow’s charm. The remaining ones include one “double-arrow” configuration near San Francisco Bay where most have been removed for wartime purposes leaving only what remains today; 50-foot tall beacons guided by their glowing red light into your heart.
Oakland is a great place for people who love to explore the nooks and crannies of their surroundings. Take an airmail flight up top at The Airmail Navigation Arrow, where they provide spectacular views of Mount Diablo in East Bay.
4. Lafayette Rink | 576 St Marys Rd, Lafayette, CA 94549
The Lafayette Rink is a Multi-Sport Facility equipped with full-sized hockey dasher boards, basketball hoops, and pickleball. They do not have staff available to assist with moving nets but all of their nettings can be easily rolled or pushed around on casters as needed.

5. LaMorinda Petanque Club | St. Marys Rd, Lafayette, CA 94549
The LaMorinda Petanque Club is a nonprofit organization to makes this ancient French game more accessible for everyone. It provides clubs and people alike an opportunity to enjoy their time outside, while also building up its federation.
LaMorinda Petanque Club is a great spot to spend some time with friends and family. The club has facilities available for all ages, including the grass field in the back where you can play pétanque or boules during afternoon hours.

With its plethora of stores and restaurants, Overlook is like a tiny town in the city. It’s so close to everything you need without being too crowded. The long sidewalk lined with shops makes it easy for residents who live there or just want some time out on their own to explore all that this little haven has offered them. 3. Exchange Community Church | 1920 Magnolia Way, Walnut Creek, CA 94595
Exchange Community Church has a rich history of planting churches all over Australia, but it was in 2008 when founders Mark & Ellie made the big move to America. They landed on American soil and were immediately called by God for this specific purpose: To start gospel ministry work at a local church.
In the summer of 2016, the founders moved to California and planted Exchange Community Church in Walnut Creek. The church offers authentic biblical preaching from an inspiring worship experience with love at its center- revealed through Jesus.

St Mary’s Church is a vibrant Christian community that brings together believers to celebrate God’s Word and be nourished by His love. They have many opportunities for education, fellowship & service as they help those in need of spiritual guidance through these ministries.
The small church has been serving Walnut Creek since before the city existed. The original building was built on Main Street in 1884 and then replaced with a larger structure for its growing congregation in 1940 when construction began on what’s now known today as St. Mary’s Church.

Walnut Creek Presbyterian Church is a faith-based organization that offers religious and community services to the residents of Walnut Creek.

The 68-acre site of Lafayette Community Park contains a diverse array of topography, wildlife, and recreation opportunities. The south end has two sports fields that are used for baseball in the Spring & soccer during the Fall seasons.
The south-end parking lot at the Lafayette Community Park is home to a Pétanque (a French variation on bocce) court and picnic tables. Local players have helped maintain these facilities by building them in collaboration with Parks, Trails & Recreation Department staff members who also provide lessons for those interested.
2. Walnut Creek Christian Academy | 2336 Buena Vista Ave, Walnut Creek, CA 94597
Walnut Creek Christian Academy is a private, Christian school that has 265 students from PK to 8 grade with 15:1 student per teacher ratio.

Walden Park is a great place to spend the day. The trail runs through many different cities, like Dublin and San Ramon in addition Alamo Walnut Creek Pleasant Hill Concord. It connects directly to both Dublin / Pleasanton and Pleasant Hill BART stations.
5. My Spanish Village | 1924 Trinity Ave, Walnut Creek, CA 94596
My Spanish Village is a family-owned company that was founded in 2006. They began as just an infant care center and then expanded to include toddlers the following year with their large facility on Northgate Drive in Walnut Creek. In 2009 they started leasing the facility of St Paul’s Episcopal Church preschool.
My Spanish Village is a preschool that has developed our immersion program, where all instructions are given in Spanish. With an age-appropriate curriculum based on enthusiastic energy and a fun attitude, this bilingual education can be both possible as well as enjoyable for children.
